In a column for Telegraaf, the former world No. 4 and 1996 Wimbledon champion praised the Big 3 players ability to keep winning without dropping down. Recalling his career, Krajicek admitted that he failed to achieve consistency.
I had different feelings about Kiki Bertens and Robin Haases losses in the Australian Open second round, wrote Krajicek, who has been the Rotterdam ABN Amro World Tennis Tournament Director since 2004.
Robin was unlucky to face Tomas Berdych, who is currently in a very good shape. Beating him is not impossible for Robin, he already showed it in the past. But this time there was no match, because Berdych was extremely strong.
Frankly, I got upset by Kikis loss, because I had given her good chances to go far. No one in womens tennis plays really much better than Kiki now. And yet, for personal experience, I know what it means for a player to crack the top ten.
If after years of work you are one of the top 10 player, a kind of childhood dream will be achieved. When you reach such a high goal, it becomes really difficult to stay super consistent. It has nothing to do with extra pressure, but its more a sort of natural reaction if you achieved something special.
When I cracked the top 10, it took two months to me to play well again. After winning Wimbledon, I did not play well for six months. The best thing is losing. If it happens a couple of times, you automatically get the right focus and you know what to work on.
Only the earths greats are able to go through a big success after another. and are not off balance when they win a big title. Thats what makes them amazing.
