A Long Island man is lucky to be alive after he was struck by a lightning bolt outside his Northport home — sending him flying around 20 feet through the air.
“It threw me against my house and totally made me incapable of doing anything. I couldn’t move, I couldn’t hear, I couldn’t see anything,” lightning-strike survivor Jonathan Borriello told The Post from his Ocean Drive home Monday.
“I can’t describe it, it was the biggest flash of white that I ever seen in my life followed by getting hit by a truck.”
Borriello, 29, stepped out of his house around 10:48 p.m. to remove a flag during Sunday night’s severe thunderstorms, and decided to watch the tempest unfold from his porch.
“I took the flag pole down, and I’m holding it in my hand. It’s a metal pole, and a flash of lightning comes off, and I said, ‘I should probably put this down.’ So I put it down and I think to myself and I laugh, ‘I’m not going to get struck by lightning,’” he said.
But just a few moments later, a bolt of lightning blasted a tree about 11 feet away and arced into his left shoulder and arm.
“What are the odds,” he marveled, standing amid singed shards of tree trunk that still littered on his porch and driveway Monday.
Northport Chief of Police Bill Ricca said: “First thing I thought was, ‘He should play the lotto.’”
Borriello was treated at Huntington Hospital and did not suffer from any life-threatening injuries, but was burned on his hands and feet, according to Ricca.
