Ludhiana NGO’s Food Truck Collects Leftovers From Weddings And Distributes It To The Needy

The less fortunate often find themselves staring at tonnes of wasted food at obnoxiously lavish Indian parties. These people saunter, take a stroll and keep running in circles outside the venue, hoping one good soul will come to give them food.

But for how long can we overlook and ignore this?

The destitute and less fortunate who go to bed empty stomach every night will now be served at least one meal every day. An NGO in Ludhiana launched a food truck service — ‘Neki Di Gaddi’ (Vehicle of Humanity) — to collect food and distribute it among the poor.

The truck will go around the city to pick leftovers from the wedding and parties. They will then collect the surplus food from across the city and distribute it. They are also open to tiny functions, basically anywhere that’s willing to contribute. They also have an option where people can call them on organisation’s helpline number.

  • This service came into action when an anonymous donor bequeathed an old vehicle to the NGO – Ek Noor Sewa Kendra.

They had their first distributing display at the city’s railway station.

“We did groundwork before launching the project. We found there is massive food wastage in the city after high-profile gatherings. We were donated a vehicle by a man who wants to be anonymous. We hired a permanent driver and the project kicked off.” said Barjinder Singh, one of the volunteers, reports The Indian Express.

“We know that weddings and parties generally get over by 3-4 am, so we have not kept any time restriction,” he added.

Furthermore, they don’t just distribute the collected food. They first inspect it thoroughly and see if it’s fit to eat or not. They are also planning to install a refrigerator so that people can have food on their own.
