After being linked to a number of college pitchers, general manager Brodie Van Wagenen’s first draft pick Monday night at the MLB draft was power-hitting Texas high school third baseman Brett Baty, who joins a system that includes a number of quality infield prospects, like Andres Gimenez and Ronny Matricio.

“He’s the best high school bat [in the draft],” MLB Network analyst Jonathan Mayo said from the draft in Secaucus, N.J.

Baty is the first high school infielder the Mets have chosen in the first round since Dominic Smith in 2013 (11th overall).

Prior to last year, the Mets had used their last four first round picks on college players, three of them pitchers. The last time the Mets had the 12th pick, they took high school shortstop Gavin Cecchini, who failed to make an impact in a few brief stint with the club.

The team has done well with their first round picks in recent years, picking players like Michael Conforto (2014) and Anthony Kay (2016), a left-hander pitching very well for Double-A Binghamton. Kelenic and Dunn are also doing well in the Mariners’ minor league system.
