November Is 'Adopt A Senior Pet Month': Consider An Oldie But Goodie

NEW YORK — November is a lot of things to a lot of people — not the least of which is Thanksgiving — but many people might not be aware that November is Adopt a Senior Pet Month.

How about another reason to be thankful this month by inviting a deserving adoptable pet into your home?

According to the ASPCA, there are four things senior pets would tell you if they could talk.

“If you are looking to add a furry friend into your family,” the ASPCA said, “consider leaving your expectations behind and opening your heart and home to a senior pet.”

The organization, along with petfinder.com, founded Adopt a Senior Pet Month to help improve what people think about senior pets.

“Sadly, senior pets are often the last ones to be adopted from the shelter,” the ASPCA said. “Most never find a home and spend the rest of their lives caged inside a shelter kennel.”

The organization said, since senior pets typically spend the longest amount of time in a shelter, they are at an increased risk of being euthanized.

Lisa Bonanno-Spence, director of development at SPCA Westchester, told Patch that adopting a senior animal is a rewarding, life-changing experience.

“Most older dogs and cats were once someone’s faithful and loyal companion,” she said. “They can easily fit into your lifestyle, are typically well-trained and adapt well to a new home.”

Bonanno-Spence said that, while you may have limited time with them, the months or years that they are part of your life will be filled with so much love.

“We’ve yet to meet someone who regretted their decision to adopt a senior,” she said.

Besides Mae and Ramona (pictured above), the SPCA Westchester has some more “oldies but goodies.” Check them out or call your local shelter and see what they have to offer.
