Once Inaugurated The Jail As Chief Guest, Brazilian President Is Now An Inmate There

It’s funny how fate turns the table for some people. While some days you can be at the top of the world, the following day you can be at the bottom of the funnel and this happened for former President of Brazil, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

NYT

On Thursday, a Brazilian judge demanded former President Luiz turn in within 24 hours and serve a 12-year sentence for a graft conviction. Luiz was convicted last year for accepting bribes from an engineering firm in return for landing contracts with the state.

On Thursday he was summoned to the court and all his pleas were rejected by the judge, in case he calls a political witch hunt. This ruling is more than likely to end his career and the dream of returning to power, ever again.

  • Furthermore, it’s quite ironic, since Luiz was the one who commemorated the opening of the building in 2007, during his presidency of Brazil. He even has a plate with his name on it outside the building.

Yet, amid all the turmoil that has been caused because of this decision, it’s laudable that the judge, without any fear, ruled in the favour of what was right and what needed to be done, regardless of the person’s authority.

Something, which might never happen India.
