Going to school? Lunch break? Hugging your parents when they came home from work?

Imagine how this 10-year-old boy must have felt, as he watched his father come home in a coffin, draped in the tricolour.

On Sunday, April 1, 2018, security forces in Shopian and Anantnag districts gunned down thirteen terrorists. In the heat of the battle, we also lost three brave jawans. You and I cannot begin to fathom the pain their families must be feeling. They say, a picture is worth a thousand words, but this one will leave you speechless.

The little boy you see in the picture is one of the martyr’s – Lance Naik Nilesh Singh – son. He is holding a neatly folded flag – the flag his father came draped in.

As children, we understand nothing about death. How is this little boy supposed to understand why his father will never make it home again? Or why some people decided to end his life? His father was indeed a brave man, and he laid down his life for his country. When he understands this, he will indeed be proud of him. But right now, at 10, his world has changed in fewer seconds than he can count.

This picture is a heartbreaking reminder of how much our soldiers sacrifice in order to keep us safe and sound, making sure everyone else makes it home. We salute these brave souls and pray that their families and friends may find the strength to cope with this loss.
