The 20-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer is off to a great start in his 20th appearance at the Australian Open, beating Denis Istomin and Daniel Evans in straight sets to extend his winning streak at Melbourne Park to 16 matches.
As usual, the Swiss maestro has achieved more great records that will hardly be matched, highlighting his everlasting class and consistency at the age when his coevals are already in their retirement days. The world no. 3 is through to the third round for the 20th time at the Australian Open and he is only the second player after Lleyton Hewitt with as many arrivals at Melbourne Park.
Last year at Wimbledon, Roger had become the fifth player in the Open era with 20 main draw showings at one Major after Jimmy Connors, Andre Agassi, Fabrice Santoro and Lleyton Hewitt and he is now only the second after Connors who had at two Majors at least 20 times (Connors at Wimbledon and the US Open).
Roger currently stands on 341 Grand Slam wins, making a debut on the most significant tennis stage way back in Paris 20 years ago and his first win came here at the Australian Open in 2000 when he ousted Michael Chang and Jan Kroslak to reach the third round on the debut, losing to Arnaud Clement in straight sets.
In the last two decades, Roger has won at least six Grand Slam matches in every season, securing almost every big Grand Slam record that propelled him towards the tennis Pantheon together with Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Pete Sampras and other immortals of our game.
