In an interview to Tages Anzeiger, the seven-time Grand Slam winner commented on loss to Stefanos Tsitsipas at the Australian Open. The Swede believes the Swiss could have moved better.
It was too difficult for him, he was too slow, said Wilander. The ball was flying, Roger had some problems with the wind and he made too many forehand errors because the ball never came for him. But also the guy in front of him played great.
Wilander added: He was not playing bad, at all. In other conditions, he would have beaten almost all the other opponents. But if someone who has no absolute fear and competes with such a game faces him.. . What happened to Federer: even if he has the best tactics, it was difficult to have a clear tactic against a Tsitsipas.
He comes from all the areas, he comes to the net, takes a risk. Its difficult to be pro-active when the opponent does so much. And he also used to attack better. I spoke with some Australians, and I suspect that they did not even try the balls, at 15C in the Rod Laver Arena with two players who hit hard.
When two older guys play, you cannot really test them even at 10C because you cannot give that touch. And on secondary courts correctly testing the balls is not possible. Because these courts are much faster because they are much more used than the big stadiums and so you cannot give too much topspin.
