SCSU’s Clint Poster wins title at Iowa State’s Nichols Open

#5 St. Cloud State University junior Clint Poster scored a big first place finish in the 157-pound division at the prestigious 2014 Harold Nichols Open, which was hosted by Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa on Saturday, Nov. 8.

Poster led the Huskies at the tournament with a perfect 5-0 record. After a first round bye, Poster opened the day with a 5-0 decision over Leivon Lewis of Ellsworth C.C. He continued his run with a 7-0 win over Tagen Lambotte of Iowa and then earned a win over Chase White of Nebraska Kearney in the quarterfinals. In the semi’s Poster scored a fall at 2:16 over Daniel Woiwor of host Iowa State, which set up his 6-2 decision win over Joe LaVallee of the University of Missouri.

Poster’s finish capped a solid day of wrestling for the Huskies at the Nichols Open. Of note, no team scores were kept at the tournament.

At 285-pounds, SCSU’s Austin Goergen impressed with a second place finish for the Huskies. He charted a 4-1 record, which included three falls and a tech fall. His wins included a first round pin over Riley Prescott of Iowa State that was followed by pins against Concordia-Nebraska’s Ceron Francisco, a tech fall over Dean Broghammer of Grandview and a pin over Iowa State’s Tyler Swope. In the title bout, Goergen lost a 13-8 match against Devin Mellon of the University of Missouri.

At 149-pounds, SCSU’s Larry Bomstad also placed second in the tournament with a 4-1 record. His run to the finals included two major decison wins and a fall. In the third round, Bomstad scored an 11-1 win over Harry Jaramillo of Nebraska Kearney before he pinned Gustavo Martinez of Grandview at 5:58 in the quarters. Bomstand continued his run with a 9-1 major win over Tyrell Galloway of Nebraska in the semi’s. He finished his day with a 13-2 loss to Drake Houdashelt of Missouri in the title bout.

Of note, SCSU’s Travis Holt also placed with a sixth place finish at 157-pounds. He had a 4-3 record at the tournament.

The Huskies will continue their 2014-15 season on Nov. 22 with a trip to the Finn Grinaker Open at Concordia College in Moorhead, Minn. Fans should make plans now to attend the 2014 Holiday Inn-Husky Open at Halenbeck Hall on Saturday, Dec. 13.
