Selena Gomez's New Nail Color Isn't a Color at All

If you've been on Selena Gomez Mani Watch this summer, you know she's spent most of the season sporting relatively low-key, classic looks. Bubblegum pink was about as bold (and as long) as she went, and she kept with the current glazed and milky trends by trying a shimmery white manicure. At one point, she went heavy on the shimmer but light on the color with iridescent, super-pale pink "angel nails." And now she's completely subtracting color from the equation — but holding on to the shimmer — with her latest look.

Gomez's favorite nail artist, Tom Bachik, posted a closeup look at what he's calling "naked summer shimmer" — perfect description for the simple, chic manicure the Only Murders in the Building star is currently wearing.  It's basically a your-nails-but-better moment: a modest length, a peek at the natural nails' color, and a hint of sparkle.

Bachik shared that he used a shimmery topcoat by Aprés Nail called Heavenly to create the look. But instead of painting it over a color as topcoats are intended, he painted it atop the brand's colorless Soft Gel Builder "for nail strength and protection."

That may sound wacky to anyone who's seen the damage that can be done when gel nails are removed incorrectly, but he absolutely makes a solid point.

"I think having a nail enhancement on [brittle nails] does wonders honestly because it prevents them from splitting," nail artist Julie Kandalec previously told Allure, referring to gel. "Nails splitting and breaking from the nail bed is pretty common. If you have an enhancement on it prevents that, so when you take them off, [the nail has] mended itself."

There's something so perfectly end-of-summery about how this manicure looks with Gomez's gorgeous (and sold out) Emmaretta dress by Doen, but needless to say, a colorless, subtly shimmery look goes with literally everything.
