Several tourists die as freak storm strikes Greece

Seven people, including six tourists, were killed and dozens more injured in a freak storm Wednesday that tore through north Greece, officials said.

The storm slammed the tourist destination of Halkidiki, where gale-force winds, heavy rain and hail battered the northern region, the BBC reported.

During the 20 minutes of extreme weather, at least 100 people were injured, authorities said.

Among the seven fatalities were visitors to the beach town from the Czech Republic, Romania and Russia, the news outlet reported. A Romanian woman and her child were killed when the roof fell through at a Nea Plagia restaurant — and a Czech couple died when the storm swept up their caravan.

The storm — which was referred to by officials as an “unprecedented phenomenon” — came after a heat wave in the country where temperatures soared to 98 degrees.

“It literally came out of nowhere,” visitor Emily Kishtoo told the BBC. “The lights cut out on the beach that we were in – it was chaos. People running, screaming and just trying to basically get off the beach.”
