The food offered by IRCTC has always been in the limelight for many reasons – poor food quality, price, service providers etc. But this time, it seems as if the government has tightened the noose and things are about to get better.
In a recent key change that has been made by the Indian Railways is all for the benefit of the travellers. IRCTC has now decided to reduce prices of its meals.

Earlier, Railway introduced POS machines to keep a check on overcharging, after many complained about the rising prices. Following this, Ministry of Railways even posted a video itemising the price list of all the items sold by IRCTC.
From April 16th onwards, catering charges on premium trains will be slashed by Rs 40 to around Rs 60 a ticket, based on the class. Here are some of the revised price that will soon come into effect.

Unfortunately, the reduction in the price for the food items excludes tea, coffee, and water. It also excludes Standard Breakfast and the Janta Meal.
Coffee in disposable cups will cost around 7 rupees on the station and inside the train and in pots it will cost 15. Tea will come at 5, tea with a tea bag will cost 7 and tea in a pot will cost 10. A 1 ltr bottle of packaged water will cost INR 15, whereas a 500 ml will cost you INR 10.
Furthermore, this year will see more inspections, regular checks and intervention from authorities when it comes to quality check of the food that is served. Food Safety Officers, Designated Officers and Joint Food Safety Commissioners will take this tole heads on to ensure no discrepancies.
