Long weekend is almost here and you’d probably be getting drunk. While it’s fun to be sloshed, the worst comes next morning, when you get that dreadful hangover, right? From rubbing lemons in your armpits to eating pickled gherkins – there are age-old hangover cures that we all follow. These cures work, definitely, but damn, they make us cringe. Well, South Koreans have found a sweet, sweet cure to hangovers. Believe it or not, they have created an ice cream that’ll cure your hangover and it’s called Gyeondyo-Bar.

According to Reuters, a convenience store chain has launched this ice cream and its name Gyeondyo-Bar translates to “hang in there.”
It is the first ice cream bar marketed specifically to combat the after-effects of alcohol consumption and it is hitting the shelves of South Korean markets this Friday.
This ice cream has a grapefruit-flavour and it contains around 0.7 percent oriental raisin tree fruit juice – a traditional hangover remedy cited in a Korean medicine book from the 17th century that is included in popular hangover potions.
South Korea is Asia’s largest alcohol consuming country. South Koreans spend $125 million per year on hangover cures which include pills, cosmetic products and stomach calming food. But now, it seems, hangovers will be the sweetest!
According to Reuters, a study by South Korea’s National Health Insurance Policy Institute estimated that the social cost of drinking, including to lost production, hospitalizations and early deaths, was about 9.45 trillion South Korean won (won is the currency of South Korea) in 2013. “The ice cream bar’s name expresses the hardships of employees who have to suffer a working day after heavy drinking, as well as to provide comfort to those who have to come to work early after frequent nights of drinking,” convenience store chain Withme FS, a unit of E-Mart Co Ltd (139480.KS), part of the Shinsegae Group conglomerate, said in a press release.
Well, all we can say is that South Koreans are definitely lucky to have this ice cream and well, we can’t wait to have it in India. It’ll be so much better than trying out those home remedies that we hate trying out.
