The Yankees will soon wear black uniforms

Here is something that will make baseball purists puke.

When the Yankees visit Dodger Stadium for three games in August they won’t be wearing their road gray uniforms. Instead, for Players Weekend the Yankees will tuck themselves into black uniforms Aug. 23-25.

While the Yankees will wear their iconic pinstripes for the two games in London this weekend against the Red Sox, the home team got to pick between white and black uniforms and the Dodgers opted for white.

The Players Weekend is a joint venture between MLB and the Players Association in its third year. Some players put nicknames on the back of their jersey and design their cleats.

In 2017, the highlights included “Red Thunder” for Clint Frazier, “Toe” for Ronald Torreyes, “Sir Didi” for Didi Gregorius, “Kraken” for Gary Sanchez and “All-Starlin” for Starlin Castro.

Last year’s Yankees batch included “GT” for Gleyber Torres, “The Knight” for Gregorius, “The Missile” for Aroldis Chapman, “G” for Giancarlo Stanton and “Pickles” for Sonny Gray.

Wearing black uniforms on the road is a big change for the Yankees, whose road uniforms have largely gone unchanged since 1918 when the gray uniforms with NEW YORK in black letters across the chest were introduced. From 1927 to 1930 NEW YORK was replaced by YANKEES in the front. In

In 1973 when double-knit uniforms were introduced the club added navy and white trim to the cuffs of the sleeves and white shadowing behind the jersey lettering.

When the Yankees donned dark blue tops to be worn with the pinstriped pants for home games in spring training in 1997, baseball purists howled, so you can imagine the uproar when the most recognizable team in American sports dresses in something different, even for just three games.
