No one is in agreement over Todd Gurley’s mysterious knee injury that made him a non-factor in the 2019 Super Bowl.
The Rams at first blamed soreness and inflammation. Last month, Todd Gurley’s trainer, Travelle Gaines, confirmed there was an ‘arthritic component’ to it.
The three-time Pro Bowl running back doesn’t appear to think so, according to a Tuesday interview with USA Today. The outlet released a transcript of it Wednesday.
Asked about having arthritis, Gurley responded: “I have it? You said I have it?”
The “it” appears to refer to arthritis, as the outlet then said that’s what had been reported, to which Gurley responded, “Oh, OK.”
USA Today then asked for the “truth,” to which Gurley said, “What? That I’m feeling good, I’m working out and doing good. Can’t complain.”
Gaines said earlier this offseason that the ailment stemmed from Gurley tearing his ACL in college.
“Everybody knew when Todd came out of Georgia that there would be some kind of arthritic component to his knee, which is part of every surgery whether it’s a shoulder, a knee, an ankle,” Gaines said.
Gaines also said he didn’t think it had that much of an impact on Gurley’s play last season.
Gurley missed the final two regular-season games, dealing with the undisclosed knee problem, after rushing for 1,251 yards and 17 touchdowns in 14 games. He also caught 59 passes for 580 yards and four scores.
Gurley returned for the playoffs — with 16 carries for 115 yards against Dallas — but had only a combined 14 carries and two receptions in the NFC Championship Game and Super Bowl 53.
Gurley’s workload has been lightened this offseason.
“We’ve been really pleased with Todd,” McVay told reporters in May. “He’s done some different things with Travelle Gaines and some of those trainers.
