President Trump blasted Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer as a “creep” in an early morning tweet after Schumer said Tuesday that he believed the president was bluffing about proposed immigration-related tariffs on Mexican imports.
Trump sent the tweet on Wednesday morning from London at about 1:05 a.m. local time, as he and his family are traveling to the United Kingdom on a state visit.
“Can you imagine Cryin’ Chuck Schumer saying out loud, for all to hear, that I am bluffing with respect to putting Tariffs on Mexico. What a Creep,” Trump wrote.
“He would rather have our Country fail with drugs & Immigration than give Republicans a win. But he gave Mexico bad advice, no bluff!” he added.
On Tuesday Schumer said on the Senate floor that he expects Trump to back off his call to levy tariffs on Mexican imports.
“Frankly, I don’t believe President Trump will actually go through with the tariffs,” Schumer said in his remarks.
“President Trump has a habit of proposing asinine and dangerous policies before backing off,” he added.
Trump has proposed putting a 5% tariff on Mexican imports beginning later in June if the country doesn’t stop illegal immigrants from crossing the border with the US. It will then increase every month by 5%, the White House said.
