The former world no. 8 is impressed by performances at the Australian Open. The Greek player defeated Roger Federer in four sets in the fourth round and he is now in the semi-finals after defeating Roberto Bautista Agut in another four-setter, in the quarter-final.
Speaking to Metro, Philippoussis said: He was one to look out for along with (Alexander) Zverev. In my opinion those two are definitely spearheading the new generation. I feel like they have the all round game and complete package gamewise, physically and mentally.
To win one match here and there is a different thing. Its about consistency. Tsitsipas had a breakout last year and hes definitely showing his consistency. Hes a strong player and hes got a beautiful all round game.
Hes obviously someone who has been consistent and he looks like hes not slowing down so Im definitely excited to continue watching him. It was a great match from the word go. Incredibly high quality on both sides.
Tsitsipas held his nerve in the breakers. He played great tennis and kept on going for his shots. Stayed positive and kept on attacking Federer, especially on the backhand side. Tsitsipas will play Rafael Nadal in the semi-final.
Nadal leads the head-to-head 2-0. Tsitsipas is the youngest semi-finalist at the Australian Open since Andy Roddick in 2003. He is also the youngest semi-finalist at a Major since Novak Djokovic reached the semi-finals of the 2007 US Open.
