Somebody get this man his “World’s Greatest Grandpa” mug.
Terry Meredith of Uley, Gloucestershire, UK, has built an epic tree house hideaway for his family and friends — complete with a charcoal grill, seating for 10 and vast countryside views to rival a bird’s.
The cabin in the canopy was built more than 16 feet off the ground, atop a willow tree that Meredith had intended to partially cut down back in 2016 because it “had grown so big that it was blocking the sunset,” says the 65-year-old gramps to six grandkids. But when he climbed the tree and got an eyeful of lush pasture, he was taken aback.
“When I climbed up, my jaw dropped, I couldn’t believe the incredible view was just 50 meters away from my house,” Meredith tells Caters News. “I was wowed by the Welsh mountains, Cotswold escarpment and a stone age fortress Uley Berry.”
Meredith, a former electrician who says he’s “good at carpentry,” spent £8,000 (just over $10,000) on materials, such as arctic pine, oak and chestnut, to build the tree house, which is actually supported by four trees facing the Welsh Hills, the Cotswolds and the Malvern Hills.
“It took about eight months to build and I did most of it on my own with some help from friends here and there,” says Meredith, who now owns a luxury dog and cat boarding service called Hydegate Pet Resort.

Locals can’t help but envy Meredith’s treetop escape — often asking if they can borrow the space for special occasions.
“I wanted to share this amazing view with my family and friends, and now six years on, even strangers come in to take a peek,” he says. “It is the perfect place to watch the sunset, to hang out with family and have a laugh, I love it.”
One neighbor even called to ask if she could host a 40th birthday celebration at Meredith’s sky-high abode. The “flattered” craftsman obliged, he says, as long as he could party, too.
“We had a fantastic night, with a steak cooked on the BBQ and some drinks,” he says. “It was like a pop-up restaurant; it makes me happy that other people can enjoy my tree house as much as I do.”
Ever the community supporter, he also says he offers the soaring getaway for charities and fundraisers.
“I always open up the tree house for people who are raising money for charity Royal Navy Lifeboat Institution by running or walking through the peak mountains,” says Meredith, referring to the RNLI Five Peaks Walk, most of which occurs along Cotswold Way near his home. He says he offers walkers “a cup of tea and a rest,” and also donates to charity any cash offered to him for use of the space.
Adds Meredith, “I absolutely love sharing the amazing views the tree house has to offer with everyone and anyone.”
