Yankees’ Giancarlo Stanton has MRI on knee after third-base collision

After finally getting off the injured list, Giancarlo Stanton hit another speed bump.

In just his sixth game back after missing nearly three months with an assortment of injuries, the slugging outfielder suffered a right knee contusion in the Yankees’ 4-3 win over the Blue Jays on Tuesday night in The Bronx and underwent an MRI exam.

“We’ll see what we have going into [Wednesday’s game],” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. “We’ll see where he is when he comes in in the morning.”

Results of the MRI exam weren’t immediately available. Boone said Stanton either hurt the knee sliding into second base in the first inning or when he tried to take an extra base later in the frame. In the opening inning, he was thrown out trying to take third base. The bag was uncovered as Vladimir Guerrero Jr. ranged far to his left to field a Luke Voit grounder. But Toronto pitcher Clayton Richard raced over and fielded the throw from first baseman Rowdy Tellez and tagged out Stanton.

It first appeared Richard stepped on Stanton’s fingers, but the team announced later he left the game because of his right knee. Stanton initially stayed in the game, but was replaced in left field by Brett Gardner to start the fourth inning.

“After he moved around in the outfield there, it felt like it was the right thing to do,” Boone said. “At this point I’m hoping it’s a bone bruise. I think [Wednesday] will be a better indicator.”

Stanton already has missed time with a torn left biceps, a strained left shoulder and left calf strain, going from March 31 to June 17 without appearing in a game. He hit his first homer since returning in Monday’s win over the Blue Jays and singled on Tuesday, but now he could be out again.

“If it’s something that’s short, eventually he’ll get into a good place. If we’re able to avoid a serious injury I’m not worried about it,” Boone said. “There’s plenty of time to start playing into that rhythm we felt like he was starting to get into.”
