12-Year-Old Plainfield Girl Dies After Hit By Car On Route 59: Coroner

PLAINFIELD, IL — The 12-year-old girl who was hit by a car Wednesday night while running away from another crash died, Plainfield police confirmed.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the girl as Gianna Lamb, of Plainfield. She was pronounced dead at 11:28 a.m. Thursday.

Commander Anthony Novak told Patch the young girl died while at Comer’s Children’s Hospital in Chicago, where she was transferred from Ascension Saint Joseph Hospital in Joliet following the Wednesday night crash.

Plainfield police and paramedics were dispatched at 8:36 p.m. Wednesday to the intersection of Route 59 and Riverwalk Court for a serious crash. Upon arriving, they discovered two separate crashes.

The young girl was a passenger in a 2009 Nissan Rogue, which failed to yield at a stop sign to a 2004 Toyota Rav4 traveling south on the state highway, police told Patch. The girl quickly got out of the SUV, ran east from the site of the crash and was struck by another car, a 2012 Ford Fusion that was driving north on Route 59, police said.

In a post on Facebook, Mayor John Argoudelis wrote that the village is working with state officials to do “all we can to prevent future accidents at this intersection.”

“We as a community again mourn a tragic accident involving our community youth,” the mayor wrote. “We pray for three families directly affected and vow to do our best to ensure the safety of our residents.”
