“I wanted to open a restaurant,” Nirmala Yerakala, the managing partner of Agra Indian Masala, said. “It’s been a dream, but I didn’t know how to start.”

Yerakala moved to the United States in 2004. Over the past 20 years, she went from being a stay-at-home mom to working in various retail and customer service positions, all while dreaming of opening a restaurant.

In 2018, Yerakala met Sharif Mamu Ji and Om Bahadur Ji (now both chefs at Agra Indian Masala), while working as a restaurant manager.

The three became friends, but it wasn’t until 2023 that Yerakala got a call from the chefs asking if she’d like to see a potential restaurant location in Red Bank. From there, Yerakala said they became business partners.

“They take care of the back-end and I take care of the front-end,” Yerakala said.

Together, the partners have created a menu featuring a wide variety of both vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes. Options range from Chicken Biryani, to Aloo Papri Chat, Yellow Dal Tadka and more.

“We prepared the menu in such a way that all of them [the dishes] are very, very authentic and very famous dishes,” Yerakala said.

In addition to the regular menu, the restaurant also offers a lunch special Monday through Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. where guests can enjoy a vegetarian or non-vegetarian meal featuring Dal, an entree, rice, naan and a dessert of their choice.

Whatever guests choose to try, Yerakala said she’s happy to see so many new faces come through the restaurant’s doors.

“When I see in people’s eyes that they love the food and they’re satisfied and they feel so happy that we opened here?” Yerakala said. “That makes me so happy.”
