MARBLEHEAD, MA — Donations made to support this year’s Marblehead Fireworks and Harbor Illumination — which were canceled last week because of a barge fire in the harbor — will be retained and used to help make next year’s event “bigger and better,” according to Town Administrator Thatcher Kezer.
Kezer told the Select Board on Wednesday night that “(for) folks have contributed funds, and such, (the plan is) to look forward to next year’s Fourth of July.”
“It is also kicking off the 250th (anniversary) of the Revolution events so our intent is to — we have a deposit that we’ve asked to carry over to next year to make next year’s fireworks bigger and better than what the norm has been,” he said. “So we’re going to take the contributions and apply them toward next year’s program. And then continue the effort to fundraise to make it bigger than what we’ve had in the recent past.”

Kezer sought to clarify any confusion about the overnight fire the morning on July 4, saying that there were no fireworks on the barge at the time that it caught on fire, and that what was burned were “launching tubes and related equipment.”
“There were no fireworks that had been brought on board to the barge,” he said. “So we avoided that.”

Kezer said that other July 4 events were successful with Abbot Hall “hopping” during the Festival of Arts and all reports to him suggested that the Horribles parade was an excellent event as well.
