There are no conflicts of interest between Miguel Arias Cañete, the climate action and energy commissioner, and his wife, whose name came up in the leaked Panama Papers on tax havens, the European Commission said today.

“His declaration appears to be in compliance with the code of conduct for commissioners as it includes all the professional activities and financial interests of the commissioner’s wife that would pose a potential conflict of interest,” Margaritis Schinas, the Commission’s chief spokesman, told reporters today.

Arias Cañete’s wife, Micaela Domecq Solis-Beaumont, had the power to approve financial transactions for the Panama-based company Rinconda Investments Group, which was set up in 2005.

“As far as the company referred to in the news is concerned, and according to the information provided by the commissioner, this company has been inactive for several years, long before the commissioner took office in November 2014,” Schinas said.

Arias Cañete found out about the leak when he was contacted by the journalists who released the Panama Papers, detailing how clients of a Panamanian law firm sought to reduce or avoid taxes, and he spoke about it with Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, Schinas added.

Domecq Solis-Beaumont retained control of her property after she married Arias Cañete in 1978, as the matrimonial regime for separation of property maintains exclusive ownership and the right to use and administer it before and after the marriage.
