Capital region dispatch began receiving calls about the outside fire at 12:30 p.m. Battalion 3 arrived a couple of minutes later and began to put out the fire. Firefighters were going to tap a hydrant near the Courtyard by Marriott Hotel but, instead, requested more firefighters, including a tanker.
Dispatch sent Battalion 1 to assist.

Firefighters worked to put out a small section of the fire to keep it from spreading to all of the debris under the bridge.
“If you can knock that down,” one firefighter said, “(it will) prevent the rest of the camp from going.”

A firefighter was seen moving debris from the area already burning — including plastic bins, boxes, a tent, an umbrella, and other items. Other firefighters came later with extinguishers and a rake to pull apart the area that was burning. Firefighters then hosed down the area with water from a tanker.
The fire was knocked down at around 1 p.m. Firefighters cleared and Engine 7 went to get more water for the tanker.
