Maplewood Cops Find Man Destroying Vehicle With Bat: Police

MAPLEWOOD, NJ — Emergency crisis negotiators were able to talk a man off a ledge of a four-story parking garage in Maplewood earlier this week after police found him destroying a vehicle with a baseball bat, authorities said.

According to the Maplewood Police Department, officers responded to the apartments at 200 Boyden Avenue on Tuesday after getting a report about a man standing on top of a car.

Officers arrived to find the man – later identified as Daniel Coley, 30, of Maplewood – destroying a vehicle with a baseball bat.

Here’s what happened next, authorities said:

“As officers ordered Coley to drop the weapon, he complied but immediately relocated and jumped onto the ledge of the four-story parking garage, threatening to jump off the ledge. Officers retreated and began to de-escalate by keeping Coley verbally engaged, while simultaneously contacting crisis negotiators [with the Essex County Sheriff’s Office]. Negotiators arrived on scene and began to speak with Coley and ultimately were able to get him off the ledge. Coley was transported to an area hospital by South Essex FD/ EMS.”

Coley was charged with contempt of court, criminal mischief, and three charges for weapons possessions, authorities said. No additional information was immediately available.
