ANAHEIM, CA — A toddler died after being locked in a car amid a record-breaking heat wave in Southern California, authorities said Saturday.

Police responded to a report of a medical emergency around 4:20 pm. Friday in the 1300 block of Fashion Lane in Anaheim, according to the Anaheim Police Department.
“A family member pulled the girl out of the car,” Officer Matt Sutter told Patch. “The mother was unconscious still in the vehicle.”

The woman and her daughter were taken to a hospital, where the child was pronounced dead, Sutter said.
A family member told NBC4 Los Angeles that the toddler’s mother had locked herself and the 3-year-old girl in the car.

“My heart is so heavy knowing that our little girl of 3 years of age died of the heat,” the mother’s great-aunt told NBC4.
It was not clear whether the woman would face criminal charges.
